There is nothing better than an amazing massage and a professionally executed traditional Thai massage is something that seriously delivers on all levels. It is important to note that there are a few etiquettes involved with a traditional Thai Massage that will make the experience better for both you and your masseuse.

  • Shower beforehand

Not only will your masseuse appreciate a clean body to work with, but it will also make the experience a far more pleasurable one for you to feel completely comfortable and relaxed. During a Thai massage, you will be placed in various positions and your masseuse will be extremely close at times. Neither of you wants to be faced with unpleasant smells.

  • Leave your body consciousness at the door

Thai massage is about your mind, body, and soul. Try to remove any negativity from your mind before your treatment. Thai massage is a choice that works for those who don’t like to get naked to enjoy some relaxation time as this type of massage is performed fully clothed. Remember, your masseuse is a professional that is focused on your muscles, energy lines (also known as sen) and movements. They are not considering what colour your clothing is or how long it has been since you shaved your legs.

  • Dress comfortably

Traditionally, a Thai massage is performed wearing loose clothing that does not impede movement while protecting your modesty. If you prefer to wear yoga pants that is perfectly fine. Your masseuse does not need access to your skin, they work through the clothing to manipulate, stretch and release any tension in your body. Try to avoid buttons or zippers or anything that could dig into you during the massage. Elastic-waisted, flexible clothing works best. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Choose something that keeps you covered through various positions and does not restrict your body from bending in any direction, and you are good to go!

  • Be respectful

Just as your masseuse will treat you and your body with the utmost respect, you need to do the same. Always keep in mind a traditional Thai massage does not include ‘extras’ and it would be highly offensive to request this or inappropriately touch your masseuse.

  • Hydration

Not so much an etiquette but more of a tip. Hydration is extremely important to gain the most benefit from your massage. Massages cause your muscles to release toxins that your body will need to process. The more water or herbal tea you ingest after the massage will help your body to do this. Try to hydrate a little before but not so much that you will need to interrupt the massage to visit the restroom!

  • Do not eat a big meal beforehand

Because of the movements your body will experience, it is recommended not to have a large meal before a massage just as you would not eat before a sporting event. A small snack if you are hungry is fine. You could experience indigestion or worse if you begin your Thai massage on a full stomach.

This is your massage. If you prefer silence that is fine. If you want to chat that is also fine. There is no etiquette here other than to do what is right for you. Your therapist might check with you about pressure levels during the massage, but generally, if you choose not to speak, then they will refrain from speaking any more than necessary to complete the service. From constant chatting to meditating or falling asleep it is all appropriate behaviour. Though do bear in mind a Thai massage is also about your mind so try to switch off if you can.

  • Speak up if you are uncomfortable

There is no shame in speaking up if you feel the movements are a little too much, or you prefer a bit more pressure. In fact, it is recommended! While your masseuse is a professional and works to the way your body responds, letting them know if something is not quite right or you are concerned about a certain movement will go a long way to making sure you get the most out of your massage.

  • Enjoy the experience

A traditional Thai massage can make you feel absolutely amazing. Enjoy the process and pay attention to your body. The feeling of relief when your muscles start to succumb to the treatment, or you feel that tension slip away is indescribable and for some, the perfect time to try a bit of meditation. For an enjoyable experience in the comfort of your own home, don’t forget to try our outcall massage service.

  • Turn off your devices

This is something that can be forgotten or you may decide to ignore the call if your phone rings. The sound of a ringing phone will end any peace you may be enjoying and leave you wondering about who called rather than concentrating on the wellness experience of the massage. For your own comfort ensure your devices are off or on silent mode.

  • Ensure uninterrupted privacy

If you are having a massage in your own home or hotel room, try to schedule a time when you will not be disturbed by partners or family. Traditional Thai massage is a process that, when experienced as a whole, delivers amazing benefits. If that process is interrupted or your mind is taken elsewhere you may find the outcome is not as beneficial as it could be.

  • Be on time

Both the masseuse and the recipient need to be mindful of the others’ time. It is a common courtesy to be ready as scheduled. Rushing into the appointment and the resultant stress can impact the amount of time it takes before the massage settles to one of calm and relaxation.

  • Music choices

Softly played meditation music works well, as do the sounds of nature or you may prefer complete silence. Whatever music choice you have just make sure it is relaxing, helps your mind to slow down and is played at a low volume to create that spa-like experience. This is yet another benefit of outcall massages, you control the environment to create your own personal Zen.
